Keeping your phone on should not be hard. StandUp Wireless helps you stay in touch with doctors, jobs, and family through the Free Phone Service Program. Lifeline recertification is a once-a-year check. It shows you still qualify. This guide tells you what it is, why it matters, and how to get it done fast.

How Does Annual Recertification Work?

Lifeline recertification is a yearly check to make sure you can keep the service. Everyone has to go through it, and the FCC sets the rules. An organization called USAC runs the check through a system called the National Verifier. Every 12 months, USAC checks whether you still qualify.

Often, state records show you still qualify. If so, you do not need to do anything. If not, you will get a notice by text, email, or mail. Then you have 60 days to send new proof.

To pass, you must meet the income limit or be in one of the programs below. You qualify by income if it is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The Qualifying programs include SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance (like Section 8), or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. If you live on Tribal lands, some Tribal programs count too, like Tribal TANF or Tribal Head Start (income-qualifying).

Why Is Keeping Your Service Active Important?

Doing your Lifeline renewal on time helps you avoid losing service. With your phone on, you can call your doctor, talk to your boss, and get health alerts.

Staying in the program also helps you save money. StandUp Wireless Lifeline plans include a minimum of Unlimited Talk, Text & at least 5 GB of Data. Offers vary by state, and service may not be available in all states or areas. Service runs on a fast, nationwide 5G network in states where StandUp Wireless is authorized.

What Documents Do You Need to Submit?

If the system cannot confirm you, you must send proof. Clear photos of your papers help avoid delays.

  • Proof of Income: Last year's tax return, 3 months of pay stubs in a row, or a letter about your unemployment benefits.
  • Proof of Program: A SNAP or Medicaid letter, benefit statement, or screenshot. It must show your name, the agency name, and a date in the last 12 months or a future end date.
  • Identity Proof: An unexpired photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. You can also use a birth certificate.
  • Address Proof: A recent utility bill or lease. On Tribal lands, a map with your location also works.

You do not need to upload a Social Security card. Just enter your date of birth and the last 4 digits of your SSN in the form.

How Do You Recertify Lifeline Service?

When it is time to recertify Lifeline, you can do the whole form online. If you get a paper form, you can mail it back.

  1. Open the USAC website or the link in your text.
  2. Enter your full legal name, date of birth, address, and the last 4 digits of your SSN.
  3. Upload clear photos of your proof if asked.
  4. Sign the form and send it before your 60 days run out.

In a few states, the steps are a little different. If you live in one of them, we will walk you through it.

What Are the Rules for Staying Active Each Month?

The most common way people lose their benefit is by not using it. You must use your phone line at least once every 30 days.

Use your line in any of these four simple ways:

  • Make a call, send a text, or use data
  • Buy extra talk time or data
  • Answer a call from someone other than StandUp Wireless
  • Directly confirm with your eligible communications carrier that you want to continue receiving Lifeline service

If you do not use your phone for 30 days, you will get a notice. You then have 15 days to use it, or you will be removed from the program. Federal rules allow only one discount per household.

FAQs

What happens if I miss my Lifeline recertification deadline?

If you miss the 60-day deadline, you will be removed from the program and lose your discount. You can apply again later, but you must send a new application.

Can I keep my current phone number during annual renewal?

Yes. Your phone number stays the same during your yearly review, as long as you finish your paperwork on time.

Does my household qualify if our income changes?

You still qualify if your household income stays at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. You can also qualify if someone in your household is in a program like SNAP or Medicaid.

How do I know when it is time to renew my phone benefits?

You will get a notice by text, email, or mail when it is time. The notice tells you what to do and gives you a 60-day deadline.

Can two people in the same home receive separate discounts?

No. Federal rules allow one discount per household. A household is a group of adults who live together and share income and bills. If two separate households live at one address, each one can apply. They must complete a household worksheet.
