This information is current as of July 7, 2022.

Casey’s offers many foods, such as sandwiches, snacks, breakfast and lunch, soda, alcohol, and of course, Casey’s famous pizza! It’s also a place to gas up for the rest of your road trip.

But what about payment? The convenience store accepts cash, credit, and debit cards, but what about SNAP or EBT benefits?

Does Casey’s General Store accept SNAP or EBT benefits?

Casey’s does accept SNAP or EBT benefits at their authorized locations. You can use your benefits to purchase fruits and vegetables, bread, juice, and most other things you can buy in a regular grocery store.

This article will detail Casey’s and what you can and cannot purchase there with your SNAP or EBT benefits.

What Is SNAP or EBT?

SNAP benefits and EBT cards are a form of food assistance from the U.S. government that has been around since the early 2000s.

You may have heard of food stamps. SNAP or EBT is an updated version of food stamps. Folks no longer must carry around food stamps with them. Instead, they have a preloaded card that they can use, just like a debit card.

Another form of assistance for folks is the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or TANF benefits. These are just another form of EBT benefits. TANF gives families some flexibility when purchasing items, allowing them to buy some household items in addition to food.

TANF also allows you to withdraw cash from an ATM with your bank card. This cash can be used to make non-food purchases from Casey’s and other retailers.

What Is Casey’s?

Casey’s is a chain of convenience stores in the north-central United States. With its headquarters being in Ankeny, Iowa, they have over 2,000 stores in 16 states. After 7-Eleven and Circle K, Casey’s is the largest convenience store entirely American-owned.

Casey’s history goes back to the late 1950s when Mr. Donald Lamberti leased a service station in Des Moines. In the next nine years, Mr. Lamberti remodeled the store and turned it into a convenience store.

Mr. Lamberti purchased another service station in the area, which would become the first official Casey’s Convenience Store. He continued to expand throughout Iowa by purchasing more stores.

With his continued success, he expanded even more into the north-central United States, offering donuts and the pizza that would become Casey’s staple food.

Casey’s now has stores in the following states:

  • Iowa
  • Nebraska
  • Ohio
  • Tennessee
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
  • Kansas
  • Oklahoma
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Arkansas
  • Wisconsin
  • Michigan
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Indiana

Casey’s started with its modest general store in 1968 in Boone, Iowa but since has grown from one state to another. They currently serve 2,300 stores in 16 states.

Casey’s prides itself on their friendly employees, food, and gasoline services.

What’s the Deal With Casey’s Pizza?

Casey’s is known for its famous pizza, which began more than 35 years ago. The pizza is hand-made from scratch, using fresh dough, real cheeses, veggies, and meats. It is made in-house and baked fresh throughout the day.

Casey’s is the fifth-largest pizza chain in the country. They are known for their specialty pizzas, including taco pizza and breakfast pizza.

Does Casey’s General Store Accept SNAP EBT?

In all their 2,300 locations throughout the United States, Casey’s will accept SNAP or EBT benefits! The company prides itself on making life better for the community.

They strive to support every effort to keep that community strong because they understand the families that live and work near their stores.

What Can I Buy at Casey’s With SNAP or EBT?

Your EBT card will pay for healthy, essential groceries that are usually covered under the EBT program, such as:

  • Milk
  • Cereal
  • Meats and Poultry
  • Pasta and rice
  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Yogurt and Cheese
  • Banned Beans
  • Grains, such as whole wheat grains
  • Non-carbonated juices
  • Peanut butter
  • Soy and tofu products

What Can’t I Buy at Casey’s With SNAP or EBT?

As with any retailer that accepts EBT benefits, there are limitations on what can be purchased. The following are some of those items:

  • Supplements, vitamins, and medications
  • Beer, wine, liquor, and other spirits
  • Cigarettes or other tobacco products
  • Live animals such as lobster or shellfish
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Hot, prepared meals
  • Pet supplies
  • Paper products
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Cosmetics

Unfortunately, because it is hot, prepared food, Casey’s pizza would not be able to be purchased with your SNAP or EBT card. Still, you can always withdraw cash to buy it!

How Do I Use My SNAP or EBT Benefits at Casey’s?

It’s simple. Separate your EBT-eligible goods from your regular items. When paying for your food items, swipe your EBT card and enter your PIN to complete the transaction.

A supervisor may require you to provide photo identification to verify your identity before paying. This protects you as the consumer, as fraud is always possible with anything.

Any amount purchased with SNAP or EBT is deducted from your monthly cash allowance.

Any other items you want to purchase can be gotten with another form of payment, such as cash or a debit card. Hang on to your receipt, which will help prevent mischarges and give you your EBT balance. You may also need it for any returns.

Can I Use EBT Card for Online Purchases at Casey’s?

Casey’s doesn’t let you use your EBT card for online purchases, curbside pickup, or delivery. You can only use your benefits to purchase in-store items in person.

Will Casey’s Cashier Know I’m Using SNAP or EBT?

The cashiers at any retailer will know you are using your benefits as they need to process the transaction as such. But rest assured, using benefits is more common than you think, so don’t feel ashamed!

The cashier also needs to know what form of payment you use to check the scanner to note which items are eligible.

Can I Use My SNAP or EBT Benefits to Buy Gas at Casey’s?

Just as you would not be able to use your benefits to purchase gas at any other retailer, you cannot use your benefit card to buy gas at Casey’s.

However, you can withdraw money from the ATM with your card if your policy allows it. You can then use that cash to purchase gas at Casey’s.

What if I Accidentally Use My EBT Card for Unapproved Items?

Accidents can happen. It’s important to be careful not to accidentally purchase something that isn’t eligible for SNAP or EBT. Often, the government can penalize you for doing so.

They can institute a ban on your SNAP or EBT Benefit plan from three months to two years for repeat offenses. So please be careful!

Conclusion

Casey’s stores offer a lot of conveniences for their customers, including snacks, gas fill-up, and of course, that delicious pizza! They also allow customers to purchase approved food items using their SNAP or EBT cards.

You cannot use your benefits card for online purchases, delivery, or gas at Casey’s.

As with most retailers that accept SNAP or EBT, you cannot purchase tobacco products, pharmaceuticals, or alcohol with your benefits at Casey’s.
